The Beginner's Guide: How To Become A Massage Therapist In Georgia

Massage therapy is much more than just alleviating back, neck, or limb stress - it's also a highly developed tool used in a range of industries, including healthcare, on cruise ships, and in spas. Massage therapy itself is a growing industry. Not only are massage therapists increasing in ranks, but pay is on the rise as well. The industry has come a long way, with countless new techniques used by today's licensed massage therapists to make people feel better and improve their quality of life.

When you become a massage therapist, the best perk is perhaps the flexibility in the job. You choose where you go, what you do, and how you do it. The discipline encompasses the best of working with people from all walks of life as well as helping them relieve tension and heal injuries, to feel better and work and move with greater ease. When you become a massage therapist, you help promote relaxation, health, injury rehabilitation, as well as encourage clients to deal with stress and chronic pain reduction or management more effectively.

Would you like to become a massage therapist? If so, the steps below will help you embark on the road to working as a licensed massage therapist in the state of Georgia.

State Requirements for a Licensed Massage Therapist

Getting started. The first, most important element is you. As a massage therapist, you should be personable, easy to work with, and comfortable touching someone in an ethical way. Delving into a new career and honing those skills involves a considerable time commitment on your part. Before enrolling anywhere, ask yourself if you:

Have enough time to complete coursework?
Can study and prepare for the next day?
Can attend regular classes throughout the week?
Can complete at least 500 hours of training?
Need financing?

Some massage therapy programs run from Monday through Friday, lasting over four hours (or approximately 21 hours a week) at the bare minimum. Other schools can have more strenuous schedules placed on the student who wants to become a massage therapist. If time is limited, some massage schools offer classes in the late afternoon or evening, or even a combination thereof if your schedule better permits a less-than-structured course calendar.

Researching potential schools is also vital. While you will cover many of the same basics, remember that not all schools are created equal. Get to know the teachers. Their teaching style may or may not jibe with the way you learn. Tour the campus. Is this somewhere you can picture yourself learning and growing?

Education/Training. The massage school that you choose should boast educational curriculum that is approved by the Georgia Board of Massage Therapy. At the school of your choice, you will be required to complete an approved program, which should be 500 hours or longer, and will cover all standard Western massage techniques. It is recommended that you do not purchase equipment until you begin your education. Purchasing a massage table prior to learning about table height can impair your ability to apply sufficient pressure during a massage session.

Throughout the duration of the massage therapy program, you will learn fundamental skills, such as Swedish, deep tissue, orthopedic, cross fiber, and neuromuscular massage therapy. You should also expect to become well versed in carrying out a physical assessment of your clients to identify key areas of the body to be addressed in the massage session.

In addition to learning a variety of techniques while at the school, you may also decide which approach interests you the most and choose to specialize in one area after you begin your career.

Licensing requirements. Upon completion of a massage therapy program, you will need to take and pass one of three exams approved by the Georgia Board of Massage Therapy.

The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards offers the Massage Board Licensing Exam (MBLEx). This entry-level exam is used to ensure that the practice of massage therapy is carried out in a safe, effective manner in a public setting.
The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork offers two certification exams. Both exams are used to establish and uphold a national standard for excellence.

Your credentials will be evaluated by the Georgia Board of Massage Therapy. Qualifying applicants will become licensed and therefore eligible to provide therapeutic massage in the state. In order to remain up-to-date with changes in the industry, 24 hours of continuing education are required during each biennial renewal period.

Affiliations. Once you are a licensed massage therapist, you must be willing to uphold strong ethical values. Affiliating with professional massage therapy organizations will aid in this endeavor and add to your credibility.

Affiliating is also a great way to network with other massage therapists in your area or state to discover the newest techniques and technologies and learn about new positions for a licensed massage therapist.

Getting a job. Have your newly acquired licensing number handy. You are required to write it out on all of your business information. You should also check in your municipality for business licensing requirements. If you affiliated with certain massage therapy organizations, you can receive pointers to assist you in looking for your first job as a licensed massage therapist.

Many employers are in need of well-qualified, licensed massage therapists to work in a variety of exciting positions. These positions include, but are certainly not limited to, spas and medi-spas, and medical offices, such as ob/gyn, chiropractic medicine, and orthopedics. Hospitals are also in need of the services of a skilled massage practitioner for cancer patients, rehabilitation, and pain management. The options are limitless when you become a massage therapist.

Wherever you go, with your newfound skills as a licensed massage therapist, you can help invigorate tired limbs and encourage better movement, improve circulation, alleviate stress, and bring smiles to countless clients throughout the day.

On the Path to Becoming a Massage Therapist: An Alumna’s Journey

As an executive-level global manager for a major high-tech company, I had a good job that paid well and I did important work that I enjoyed… life was good. Then key direction and upper management changes at the company, moving into peri-menopause, empty-nest syndrome, and the horrific events of 9/11/2001 threw me for quite a loop! I began questioning my place in the world and what I was doing with my life. A year after 9/11, I felt that I still wasn’t firing on all “happy cylinders”, so I started working with a life/career coach to help deal with the issues I was facing at work. (At that time I did not recognize my confusion around the bigger life picture.) One day my coach asked, “If money were no object, and you could spend your time doing whatever you wanted… what would it be?”
Well! Humph! And humph again! That sure got me thinking…. For years, I had loved to get a good massage, had dabbled with it working on friends and family. I seemed to be really good at helping people get over headaches. Anyone I would work on would tell me that I should be doing massage. I shared with my coach that massage therapy would be a possibility, and of course, her homework for me that week was to look at the local massage schools to see what kinds of programs they had to offer. Together we worked out my priorities for a learning program.
A few key criteria guided my evaluations of the various massage schools in the area: #1) It had to have an evening program, as I was working full-time. #2) It had to be close enough that I could make it to class on time after work. And most importantly, #3) It had to have a very robust program. I felt that if someone were going to touch people as a professional massage therapist and impact their health and well being, it would be imperative that they have the best education possible. Top earner in my evaluation score card was The Boulder College of Massage Therapy. Not only was BCMT nearby work, with an evening program, it had a world-renowned reputation. (Sure, it wasn’t the shortest or cheapest by any means, but neither of those criteria held a significant rating in my grading scale.) Did you notice the “someone” and “they” two sentences earlier? I never intended to sign up for anything throughout this investigation… it was simply a homework assignment from my coach.
Of course, the Universe has its own agenda. It, usually, understands what is good for us even if we don’t recognize it ourselves, and responds appropriately! I graduated from BCMT’s Massage Therapy Certificate program in 2004, (with honors, I might add!), and began a part-time practice from my home based on the business plan I had created in a career class assignment. I also continued my education at BCMT, completing the AOS Degree program in June 2005. That same year, I earned additional certifications in Orthopedic and Sports Massage and in Zen Shiatsu. (Am I a classic Type-A personality or what?!?!)
After 17 years with the high-tech company, I was laid-off November 2006, and my next life-chapter began in earnest. My time at BCMT most certainly was worth the time & money, putting my home life on hold, all the stress of maintaining a full-time executive-level job in a downward spiraling company AND, for almost 3 years, showing up at BCMT 4 nights a week (and lots of weekends for electives), doing homework, studying for tests, and working clinic and community service hours. As this blog progresses, I will relate my experiences in making the transition from corporate executive to massage therapist, the challenges I faced, what worked and what didn’t in building my business, and more importantly, how the education I obtained at BCMT differentiated my work from the crowd. Stay tuned, dear reader… the journey has just begun….

Should you become a Massage Therapist? 4 questions to ask

What do you think about first when you think about becoming a massage therapist? Learning about how the human structure works, and how to work out aches and pains? How about the human interaction youll receive working with different clients day in and day out? Weve put together a list of 4 questions to ask yourself to determine if you have the right stuff to consider a career in massage therapy.

1.) Do you like caring for and helping other people?

It makes sense that this is the number one question to ask yourself, if youre not interested in helping others (while of course none of us would admit it) a career in massage therapy probably isnt for you. Based on the fact that 95% of your job is spent interacting and caring for clients if you dont want to help them, you wont enjoy your time.

2.) Do you mind working silently, without the normal office chatter?

A massage therapist while they care for many clients in the run of week, dont get into the same banter as say a hairdresser would with their clients. Often a client is there for a relaxing experience receiving their massage, and would like to lay in silence forgetting about the outside world for 30-60 minutes. Its important that youre able to work silently, and not let this get to you.

3.) Do you work well alone? Or do you require supervision

Being able to manage your own time properly both while with a client, and booking appointments etc. is important to being a successful massage therapist. Since the majority of time is spent one-on-one with the client there are no direct supervisors ensuring youre doing your job correctly. Also if you work for yourself, there is no one around ensuring your looking for new business, and booking appointments to keep your business in growth mode.

While many massage therapy graduates work for spas, medical clinics, or sports facilities and dont need to look for their own client base its important to know that you have that option down the road if you want to go out on your own.

4.) Are you able to empathize with a persons problem, and keep work separate from your emotions?

Often a massage therapy client will be suffering from an accident or medical situation. This can sometimes be difficult to deal with, as our first instinct maybe to feel bad for the person. Its important to be able to empathize with them but not feel bad for them. Separating our personal feelings about a situation like this from our professional atmosphere is a must to be able to handle the many different types of patients and clients youll encounter during your career as a massage therapist.
Beyond these questions, its important that you know you enjoy working with the public, and a strong communicator. Whether youre working for a spa or for yourself in the massage therapy business one thing is consistent you will be working with members of the public, and you will be supplying them with a service. You must be able to feel comfortable with the situation, and understand what the entire career entails before making your decision.

Massage therapy is a very rewarding career, and can allow a person great flexability in their schedule especially if they choose to work for themselves, but it is not a lazy job. It brings great pride to know your helping others, and making a difference. I hope this article has shed a little more light on what it takes to become a massage therapist besides the certificate and education.

Choose a background color that’s very calming and relaxing to the eye. For the font, it should depict elegance and compassion so that the individual that will be receiving the card will feel that he/she would be in good hands if ever he/she decided to contact the massage therapist.

Blackadder ITC, Monotype Corsiva, French Script MT, and Mistral are good selections for the font. The standard business card is 2 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide. This is commonly the best choice, as it will fit in card holders and match up with other business cards, and will generally have the lowest printing cost. In the content of the card, make sure in particular the contact numbers should be big and bold next to the name of the massage specialist. Focus on the front impression of your card, people can judge someone by just taking a look at his/her business card, so make everything straightforward yet classy as possible. You can put your address at the rear of the card, as that would be the very last thing that a person would look for if he/she decides to give your massage a try. And to make your business card stand out of from the rest, think about a familiar phrase, something like’Come to meRefresh.. Your mind and soul’. It is like hypnotizing people with only your slogan.

A business card creates a physical connection and bond between you or your business and your clients. Follow those tips and you’ll surely have a great and striking card available.

As such, any therapist has to have graduated successfully from a school which is considered by the province as an affiliated and certified school in which to do so.

Although, as many students and individuals who have ever had a massage knows, when it comes to massage there are many different styles and techniques taught and used throughout the world. In Canada, one must complete training in a specialized area then continue to add on other areas once one is registered. Of course, after doing so, one is registered to provide at least one massage technique.

Such coursework can be obtained through one of a variety of programs offering training in body work, reiki, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, shiatsu and therapeutic touch. So, one may want to research which style of body work one is most interested in providing. Although, as there are many areas of specialized massage therapy, once registered most individuals continue training in other areas in order to provide a combination of services at some point in their career.

Although, massage therapy can definitely be an excellent field in which to work which offers a great deal of independence as well as monetary support if one is good at the process. As in Ontario, requirements are that individuals complete 2200 hours of coursework before becoming a registered massage therapist. However, as one is generally working as an apprentice, one can learn a great deal about massage styles and techniques by doing so.

Also, as of April 1, 2009, the Canadian First Ministers have declared that professions such as massage therapy be regulated and massage therapists be allowed to work across all provinces. Therefore, if one has trained in one province, chances are with a short online course and testing, one can work in all provinces within Canada. To this end, although one may want to attend training in their home area, one is no longer limited with regards to which provinces in which one can provide such services.

In addition, if one desires to become a registered massage therapist in Ontario for example, one can also work in other provinces as long as one has passed the online test and is certified to do so. Otherwise, one can get in great trouble for providing massage services for which one is not licensed or registered. To this end, if one is not a registered massage therapist in Canada, one may want to be cautious about offering such services.

With regards to costs, massage school, while not as expensive as in the United States, is not cheap. This is because massage therapy is self-regulated. In addition, it is a self-supporting career in which one generally finds their own clients with which to work in such fashion. However, the government only allows funding for fees of public council members. Therefore, the college attempts to keep fees for attending such programs as low as possible in comparison to other schools.

Also, one may want to go to school in the area in which one lives, or at least the province, as fees can range from five to seven hundred dollars depending on the area. Still, in the United States, people pay thousands of dollars and spend hours in training to become licensed in massage. So, if one desires to become a therapist, one may want to review the many options and schools available at the time of such decision.

Last but not least, if one is inclined to become a Registered Massage Therapist in Canada, one can do so quite easily. However, one must be able to dedicate a lot of time and study to such practice. This is because, as in medical school, one must learn a great deal about anatomy and the physical aspects of the body. So, while it may be an excellent career choice, one need be sure it is a field in which one can work without emotional attachment as there are also many rules and regulations in relation to clients and therapists. Otherwise, one may spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on training, only to have to repeat same at a later date. On the other hand, one may also find that massage school is the answer to a number of financial issues; However, those doing massage mostly do so out of love for body, mind and spirit, as well as to pay bills. Regardless, massage is an art form that heals and relaxes the client and is something that every individual need to try at least once in their lifetime.

Massage therapist helps ease more than just stress

In her 15 years as a licensed massage therapist, Lee Stang has soothed the sore muscles of Olympians, the U.S. Power Lifting Team and some of the best players from the University Of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team. She also works on local folks.

"My clients have ranged from three months to 88 years old," she said at her studio, Bridges to Health, at 17 Farmington Ave. "We focus on injuries, chronic pain and health conditions, but massage also helps people with multiple sclerosis, fibro mialgia and cancer. It’s also great for general relaxation and stress reduction."

Stang grew up in Pennsylvania and came to Connecticut "by way of Indiana." While working to help rehabilitate people with head injuries, she was impressed by the benefits her clients got from massage.

"I thought, ‘I could do that,’" she said.

So she enrolled at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and began to study. She earned her license in 1995. While building her practice, she also taught anatomy and physiology and clinical massage at the school, where she still teaches.

Massage has many benefits, Stang said. It helps surgery patients recover and helps old or infirm people with mobility. Those with chronic pain feel better after half an hour on the table.

"Some of my most rewarding work was with breast cancer patients," she said. "Massage helps their recovery time. I work on their shoulders so they can lift their arms completely."

Stang has also taken advantage of the chance to travel in her career. She worked at the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the Paralympic Games in Greece in 2004, where she helped organize the massage therapists for the track and field teams. She travelled with the U.S. Power Lifting Team to Prague and accompanied the lady Huskies to San Antonio during the Final Four. She even coordinated the massage therapists at Ground Zero in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001.

"This is hands-on work," Stang said. "That’s why it’s so effective."

In 2006 she was named the National Sports Massage Therapist of the Year by the American Massage Therapy Association and will be teaching at the National Massage Therapist convention later this year.

Stang shares her office with several other therapists. Some specialize in various techniques, such as Reiki and Reflexology.

Stang lived in Plainville when she opened her studio, but seven years ago she moved to Southington. Now her business is following. In April she will be moving to 1850 West St. There are also other massage therapists there, along with chiropractors and nutritionists, so people can access a variety of services in one place.

"It’s a great profession to be in," she said "There’s the opportunity to effect people in a lot of different ways."

Massage therapist opens doors to those in pain

Cindy Scoggin rubs clients’ pain away from the comforts of home.

Scoggin moved to Florida five years ago from Las Vegas to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.

“All three of my kids are military or part of military families,” Scoggin said sitting on her couch in Santa Rosa Beach. “I came here because I wanted to be in a place where I could see my grandchildren grow up.”

Scoggin, who is certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, in addition to being licensed in the state of Florida, has been performing massages for five years.

“I specialize in medical massages,” she said as she shows off the massage room in her Santa Rosa Beach home. “I have my own table and will travel to my patient’s houses if I have to.”

While she still hasn’t settled on a name for her business, Scoggin uses the slogan “Special Hands for Special Care” to describe her work.

“I can work forever,” she said. “I have customers who call me Helga because of how strong my hands are. Medical massage is hard work and is not for the faint of heart.”

In addition to growing her home business, Scoggin is currently working at Aquarius Spa in Grayton Beach.

“Medical massage therapy is all together different from a regular massage,” Scoggin said. “There are actually very few of us around.”

One of the main reasons people get medical massages is because of car accidents. And this is the reason Scoggin started in her field of choice.

“About five years ago, I got into a really bad car accident in front of the mall in Mary Esther,” Scoggin said shifting on the couch. “My truck was t-boned and totaled. I think I slid like 20 to 30 feet.”

After her accident, Scoggin started going to a massage therapist and a chiropractor.

“It really helped with the pain,” she said. “To this day I still don’t feel any pain from it.”

Scoggin can treat a multitude of injuries that affect most people.

“Since becoming a medical massage therapist, I have treated everything from knee and back pain to leg injuries, rotator cuff problems and headaches,” she said. “Would you rather get a massage, or take a bunch of anti-inflammatory meds and pain-killers?”

Moving forward, Scoggin has a dream to grow in the area and build up her clientele.

Although business has been slow, Scoggin has received praise from her clients.

“I have had people tell me that after getting a massage they were able to stop taking various pain medicines,” she said. “They are also having the best nights of sleep they have had in years.”

Magic hands

There’s a new registered massage therapist at Back in Motion.

Julie Pouliot says she loves working in a clinic that also offers chiropractic and acupuncture care.

“All our work is complementary and it’s great to be able to be part of such an amazing holistic practice,” the 22-year-old said.

Pouliot recently graduated from the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy, where she became registered in B.C. Her previous experience was in Quebec.

“I’ve known since I was in Grade 9 that massage was all I wanted to do,” she said.

She studied Swedish and Shiatsu massage techniques and started offering chair massage when she was 17.

She also did sport massage, working for the Montreal Alouettes to give the athletes massage during training camps.

But in Quebec, massage therapists aren’t registered. She wanted to come to B.C. because it’s a more recognized treatment here.

“I knew myself that massage is a good treatment for injury, and wanted to live somewhere that it’s part of the medical system,” she explained.

The program she took in B.C. was three years. She learned human anatomy in much the same way as a medical doctor would.

At Back in Motion a lot of her work is to treat sport injuries and tension stress caused by repetitive motion for people with desk jobs.

“Massage can do so much, from breaking up scar tissue and stimulate healing for people with injury to helping with relaxation and allowing people to feel more present in their body," Pouliot said.

Massage is covered by most medical benefit plans.

“People think massage is a luxury, but really it’s a treatment and should be considered essential for everybody,” she said.

Massage therapist lends hand at center

When Bea Furman was dealing with a crisis pregnancy 21 years ago, she found help at a crisis-pregnancy center. Two decades later she is still grateful for the love and support she received during that difficult time.

That appreciation is why Furman chose to volunteer at the Center for Women.

``I believe that every person should do what they can to better their community,'' the 46-year-old said. ``(Volunteering) gives me an opportunity to give back to the community at large what was given to me.''

Furman began volunteering at the Center for Women nearly 14 years ago. Once a week, she spends time administering pregnancy tests and organizing items for the center's Learn & Earn program. She uses her experience as a licensed massage therapist by teaching classes on infant massage.

Kathy Wilson, director of client and volunteer services at the center, said she appreciates the talents and passion that Furman brings to the center.

``(Furman) has a heart for serving others and she's willing to do anything,'' Wilson said. ``She is very special and very diverse ... I think (the infant massage) helps us, as the center, to be unique.''

During her time with the center, Furman has enjoyed the family atmosphere and interacting with the other volunteers and clients.

She has also learned the importance of not allowing her personal beliefs to inhibit the care she provides for her clients.

``It's important to love people where they're at and respect them for where they're at,'' she said. ``I've realized you have to step aside and not let yourself judge; instead love.''

Furman also has volunteered at the Jackson Interfaith Shelter since 2007 and is involved at Bethel Baptist Church.

Furman has owned Healing Song Therapeutic Massage for the past seven years. She has been married to Burt Furman for 16 years.

Becoming Your Own Massage Therapist

AS a former cross-country runner for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where a free massage was part of an athlete’s weekly schedule, Briana Boehmer remembers the benefits of having qualified hands work her sore muscles.

Now that she is 30 and starting a corporate wellness business with her husband, Mrs. Boehmer no longer enjoys such a perk, so she massages her muscles herself. She works out about seven hours a week, training for triathlons and duathlons, and begins and ends each session by kneading her back and legs on a foam roller, which she calls her “best friend.”

“It’s like getting a massage without having to pay $85 an hour,” she said. “I can’t afford the real thing right now.”

Devices for self-massage have become more common as more people compete in endurance sports and, more recently, as the recession has made professional rubdowns look prohibitively expensive. Trainers usually recommend a massage every week or every other week for people who are training for a marathon or triathlon, but the costs do add up: according to the shanghai massage Therapy Association, the average price of a massage is $63 an hour.

Though a massage may sound like a luxury, it can become a necessity as part of a training regimen. When the same muscles are forced to do the same motions over and over, they become tight and injury-prone.

For instance, “riding on aerobars on the bike sets up a huge muscle imbalance in the upper back and shoulders,” said Tim Crowley, a triathlon coach in Marlboro, Mass. “Hip flexors, hamstrings and glutes become extremely tight and immobile from running.”

While it’s hard to say how many people do self-massage, many athletes swear by it, and a growing range of products and how-to videos is available in stores and online. A foam roller, which costs about $25, is just one of a family of products, manufactured or improvised, that can relieve tight muscles.

“In the late ’90s, you could only find foam rollers through physical therapy catalogs,” said Keats Snideman, a massage therapist and conditioning coach in Tempe, Ariz., who produced a DVD about self-massage. “Now you can buy them anywhere, and exercises with them are all over YouTube.”

In addition to the many name-brand products that are sold specifically as massage aids, old-fashioned household objects will do, too. Most small balls, including golf, tennis, baseball and lacrosse balls, beijing massage can unkink sore muscles.

Rich Poley, author of the book “Self-Massage for Athletes,” favors using your own hands. But he is also a fan of the Knobble II, a mushroom-shaped device that can be used to press on muscles at specific trigger points to try to break up knots, and the Thera Cane, a hook that can be used to reach points on the back.

For all its advantages, self-massage has its limitations. Cassidy Phillips, founder of Trigger Point Performance Therapy, considers it the equivalent of oral hygiene. “You brush away some plaque yourself,” he said, “but you still go to the dentist for a thorough cleaning.” His company, based in Austin, Tex., sells self-massage tools for athletes.

Clearly, a massage from a trained therapist can be more effective — and relaxing — than a self-administered massage. A therapist also has a comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and can help with injuries, like muscle strains, that may not respond to self-massage.

“A foam roller can’t alleviate deep trigger points the way an experienced thumb or knuckle can,” said Collette Glass, a sports massage therapist in Atlanta.

Yet Mrs. Glass, whose livelihood depends on athletes who need her care, is a proponent of self-massage. She and her husband, Dr. Josh Glass, a sports chiropractor, hold self-care seminars in the Atlanta area several times a year. “The message we stress through the whole demonstration,” she said, “is that self-massage keeps you out of our offices.”

Any kind of massage —the professional type and the D.I.Y. — can stimulate blood flow and break up scar tissue, thus reducing an athlete’s risk of injury, Mrs. Glass said. “In massage, shortened, overworked muscles get flushed out and return to a normal length, which helps them properly recover,” she said. When she was training for Ironman triathlons in 2006 and 2008, she said, she used a roller every day to soothe her iliotibial bands (tendons that run along the outside of the upper leg).

Jenni Gaertner, a physical therapist and competitive cyclist in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, also advocates a combination approach. “I go to a massage therapist only during racing season, because it can be so expensive,” she said. “But I use a foam roller year-round and prescribe it to patients and teammates.”

ABBY RUBY, an athlete and coach from Manitou Springs, Colo., massaged her muscles daily while training for a 100-mile trail run in Leadville, Colo., this year. She doesn’t leave home without her tools: half of a foam roller and a small ball from Trigger Point Performance Therapy. “I sit on the ball on flights to release my piriformis,” she said, referring to a muscle deep within the hip and buttock region.

Convenience and affordability are the selling points for Ms. Ruby. “When I need a massage, I need it now, not next Wednesday at 3 p.m.,” she said.

Massage therapist accused of sexually abusing clients

A Cottonwood Heights man who police say posed as a licensed shanghai massage therapist at a fitness center is accused of sexually abusing two clients.

Robert Battle, 46, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with three counts of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse in connection with two separate cases last winter with women he picked up at Lifetime Fitness in South Jordan.

In the first case, Battle fondled a client who made an appointment with him following a difficult pregnancy, charging documents state. The woman met Battle at Lifetime Fitness, where she was informed that he had attended medical school and had just passed his medical board exams in another state, according to charges.

Battle told the woman he needed to do "internal work" on her because her body wasn't "holding" prior massage work, charges state. He twice performed what he called a vaginal massage on the woman at a Cottonwood Heights office in June.

In the second case, a woman claimed she also met Battle at Lifetime Fitness and made an appointment with him for help with back pain. She said Battle covered her with a sheet and gave her several massages on her back and legs, charges state.

Eventually, however, he started to perform the massages without the sheet. He told the woman during one massage that he needed to touch "a massage point by her vagina," charges state. The woman allowed Battle to continue the massage because she trusted him, according to charges, but ended the session when he began toughing her vagina.

Cottonwood Heights police said Battle is not a licensed massage therapist, but he recently graduated from Myotherapy College of Utah, a massage therapy school, in Salt Lake City.

Company officials at Lifetime Fitness in South Jordan declined to comment Wednesday.

Several supporters of Battle have established a defense fund for him. Testimonials from people claiming to be Battle's clients state he behaved professionally and helped them overcome medical issues.

The latest charges against Battle join two pending cases filed in 3rd District Court in August. In those cases, Battle was charged with three counts of unlawfully conducting a massage, a class C misdemeanor and sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor, for alleged incidents involving clients in November 2008 and July 2009.

Massage Therapist to the Stars

Massage therapist Mary Lundberg, who specializes in providing massage to musical performers and other celebrities, was profiled in the news recently.

The Minneapolis/St. Pau-area newspaper Vadnais Heights Press reported Sept. 4 that Lundberg has massaged, among others: Bruce Springsteen, JayZ, Johnny Cash, the Grateful Dead, the Carter Sisters, Aerosmith, Mickey Rooney,Jon Bon Jovi, the Eagles, and members of Riverdance and the Danish
Ballet.

"While curing [sic] the likes of James Taylor and Faith Hill is a thrill, so too are her everyday clients, she said," the newspaper noted. "With her repeat clients she gets the reward of witnessing how her services progressively improve their lives, she said. Despite all the stars she’s touched, her most cherished work is helping soothe a church friend who’s battling cancer."
