The Anatomy of a Massage School Makeover
Sometimes you get an idea that makes perfect sense, but you simply do not have the appropriate place to launch it. Maybe the timing isn't right, or the manpower and implementation that you need to launch would be more than you have capacity to offer.
Yet you know the idea has merit, and can benefit so many in the industry. I had the idea of a "Massage School Makeover" rolling around in my head for almost a year. Despite all the willingness and excitement about the project, nothing seemed to come into alignment to enable this idea to grow feet and walk on its own.
One day, I was talking with my dear friend Scott Dartnall of World Massage Conference (WMC) about how to invite schools to attend the WMC and give them an all-access pass to the presenters for free. Since schools and students are a huge part of my involvement with the industry, and recognizing the potential outreach the WMC could have with its positive impact on students and schools - a light bulb went off in my head.
Perhaps, finally, this was the perfect launching pad for this outrageous and unprecedented event I had knocking around in my head for so long. Our own company, Massage Warehouse and the World Massage Conference would be an awesome collaboration, with the exposure and ability to make the idea work. I took a deep breath and pitched the idea to Scott. To my delight, he was as excited about the project as I was.
Hunger for Product Knowledge
The idea of the makeover came about as a direct result of my school visitations and trade-show participations across the nation, and seeing the hunger for product knowledge on behalf of the students, as well as the schools. Additionally, our school program at Massage Warehouse is designed to help schools and students make the appropriate choices for the good of their practice, economically and as hassle-free as possible. It was in these interactions with schools that it became clear our responsibility was to make sure we come up with a way to broaden the overall exposure and education about products. As my role with Massage Warehouse has evolved over the years, one thing has definitely not changed - my desire to educate and expose students and therapists to a wide array of professional-grade products.
I could see need and opportunity for greater exposure and involvement in product and supply education. This is where the many contacts I have made with hundreds of vendors over the years could come into play. Then I could share the hopes that perhaps we could all come together as a community and each take a part in a program designed to bring these products forefront where they can be considered, discussed and researched by the schools and students alike.
To my great happiness, the response has been overwhelming. Manufacturers, educators, and product suppliers from all segments of the business have made their commitment and expressed their support for this project. Take a look at these wonderfully generous professional product partners on MassageToday.com and click on "Massage School Makeover." You can learn a bit more about the growing size of the final award and explore direct links to the professional product partner Web Sites to learn more about the products they offer.
This project really involves each and every individual within our industry. When I tried to drill down to the impact it may have and who the participants would be, one overwhelming truth occurred to me. While therapists each have their own specialty, their one commonality is the fact they all graduated from someplace. Each practitioner learned their modalities and techniques from an instructor while attending a school. This would enable every therapist an opportunity to voice support and to nominate their own school.
I would encourage instructors, educators, directors, school owners, students and therapists to take a moment to visit the Massage School Makeover page and nominate their school. Perhaps you will be the catalyst for your school to receive a makeover valued at more than $16,000, and growing! With greater exposure and participation on behalf of the vendors, there is no telling how great the final award may be. Your odds of winning are substantial, and the possibility of this award coming to your school is well within reach!
I would also encourage every school, instructor or school director/owner to participate in the free access to the World Massage Conference. Here, world-class presenters will be inside your classrooms, providing insight and instruction to your students, free of charge. It is unprecedented access to some of the world's leaders in our industry and an opportunity that should not be missed.
I would like to thank all of our professional product supply partners for their selfless support of this event. It is with great joy in my heart we launch the Massage School Makeover, and it is my hope we can communally share the goodwill and awareness of the support of education through this event.

Whats The Deal With Massages?
Massage is the kneading and rubbing parts of the body to increase circulation and promote relaxation. Massage therapy is often where a practitioner applies pressure or vibrations to the soft tissues of the body that can include joints, muscles, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments. Massage is effective when applied to both specific parts of the body or as a complete body massage in order to heal injuries, relieve psychological stress, manage pain, improve circulation and even relieve tension. When massage is used specifically as massage therapy, it is being used for both its psychological and physical benefits to the subject receiving the massage.
Massage therapy is said to have more benefits than for healing and stress management. Anyone who indulges in a massage is said experience increased relaxation, a soothing sensation, healing benefits, a comforting feeling, the release of tension, stiffness and pain, better breathing patterns, increased circulation and an overall improved sense of well being. Massage is often thought of as effective in treating themuscles just under the skin's surface, but its benefits may go deeper into the body and even to the organs. Massage is effective in activating blood circulation and helping the lymphatic system (interconnected system of spaces and vessels between body tissues and organs by which lymph circulates throughout the body) while bettering the excretion of waste throughout the body.
Most times when an individual will have a professional massage or participate in massage therapy, they are required to undress and lie down on a massage table or in a massage chair. While the person receiving a massage is virtually naked, the body is always covered with a towel or sheet in order to help the client relax during their massage and to stay warm. While men and women require coverage on different areas during a massage, massage professionals and therapists are well trained in maintaining modesty throughout all massages.
The benefits of massage can be experienced through a single massage, but a series of massage treatments will be the most beneficial to any massage recipient, as the effects are successive. Massage can result in a stronger, more toned body and assist in preventing injury. Tension reduction and reduced stimulation of the nervous system as a result of regular massage can also help in an increased energy level. So if your no already having them often, you may want to think about your relaxation and health for the future.

Types of Massage for Ailments, Aches, and Pains.
There are many different types of massage that are available for different types of ailments, aches, and pains.
The most common type of massage is the relaxation massage that is used to induce an overall sense of relaxation. This relaxing type of massage can also be used to improve the circulation in your body as well as give you some temporary relief from sore muscles.
Another type of massage is called the paramedical massage. This massage deals with the soft tissues in your body that has been injured, many times in a sport's injury. A trained massage therapist will be able to perform techniques on you that will aid in your recovery from soft tissue damage. Many times the recovery time of an injury will be lessened if you are able to combine massage therapy with other treatment.
Another type of massage is known as aromatherapy massage. This type of massage combines a relaxing massage with the use of essential oils, many of which have some healing properties. Aromatherapy is used in many spas around the country as a great way to induce relaxation while at the same time relieving muscles of soreness and stiffness.
Reflexology is yet another form of massage that is very popular. The massage therapist uses his or her fingers to place pressure on certain points of your feet. These points of your feet are in correspondence with certain areas of the body. Reflexology is most often used to attain a sense of balance
Oriental types of massage are also very popular. There are different types of oriental massage, such as shiatsu and acupressure. Both these massage methods focus on the points in the body that are located on the pressure meridians. The goal of oriental massage is to achieve balance and harmony in the body and bring about an overall sense of well being.

Massage Therapy And Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Massage Therapy and Bodywork provided by a skilled Licensed Massage Therapist are very effective in treating muscular pain and related problems arising from muscular issues. For example, in my San Antonio, Texas based Massage and Bodywork practice I often treat pain from nerve entrapment syndromes including the well-known Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Like many painful conditions, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome responds quite well to massage therapy and bodywork.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the name of a painful nerve entrapment condition, in which the median nerve is placed under abnormal pressure by the tendons of forearm muscles passing through the carpal tunnel on the palm side of the wrist. When the tendons passing through the carpal tunnel become tight and enlarged, pain results from myofascial trigger points (knots) in the muscles, and pressure on the median nerve. Pain from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is usually found in the palm of the hand on the thumb side. Additionally, there is very often numbness or a pins and needles feeling in palm, thumb, forefinger, and middle finger. Most of the time the symptoms are on one side, usually the dominant hand, but may affect both sides at the same time. Additionally, people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often have a sense of weakness of grip in the affected hand(s) and symptoms may worsen with continued use.
What is the cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
There are a number of causes for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome including direct blunt trauma to the wrist itself, and poorly healed breaks of wrist and forearm bones; however, this syndrome is most often caused by overuse and/or repetitive stress of the forearm muscles whose tendons go through the carpal tunnel to the hand. Examples of activities contributing to this syndrome include prolonged use of screw drivers or other hand tools, excessive computer use and typing, detailed work such as needlepoint, and other activities requiring highly repetitive forearm and wrist motions.
Massage Therapy and Bodywork for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
There are many ways that massage therapy and bodywork can be used to treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The massage therapist will employ a number of techniques to relieve the condition. For example, the massage therapist may use Neuromuscular Therapy or Trigger Point Therapy to eliminate myofascial trigger points in the muscles of the forearm to take tension and pressure off of the tendons in the carpal tunnel. The massage therapist could also use Myofascial Release techniques or Deep Tissue Massage techniques to release adhesions between the forearm muscles and surrounding tissues while also using Muscle Energy Techniques to gently lengthen the forearm muscles. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome also responds well to positional release therapies such as Ortho-Bionomy which work with the body's nervous system to release muscles and improve joint movement in the wrist and hand area. Lymphatic Drainage Massage techniques might also be used to enhance lymph flow in the wrist area to decrease pressure in the area. Working on the muscles whose tendons go through the carpal tunnel may be enhanced by providing therapy for other muscles opposing them to improve muscular balance. Comprehensive treatment with massage and bodywork, in conjunction with a home program of stretching and exercise, usually helps to completely resolve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Other Treatments for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
While massage therapy and bodywork are an excellent treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome there are other treatments you should discuss with your physician:
Wrist Splints
Steroid Injections
Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS)
Decompressive Surgery
Other Names for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Chronic Wrist Pain
Pinched Nerve

The Wonders of Epsom Salt
Epsom salts are named for the mineral rich waters of Epsom, England, where they were known at least as far back as Shakespeare’s day. When bathing, the magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) is absorbed through the skin and is an inexpensive and natural way to reduce stress, treat skin problems, and draw toxins from the body.
Epsom salt has been a long time remedy natural remedy for a number of ailments. An Epsom salt bath is known to relieve aching limbs, muscle strain and back pain. In addition, it has been known to heal cuts, reduce soreness from childbirth and relieves colds and congestion. Furthermore, Epsom salt will flush toxins and heavy metals from the body.
Epsom Salt is a natural stress reliever too. Stress drains the body of magnesium. An Epsom salt bath absorbs magnesium into our body thus helping to relieve stress. The magnesium helps to produce adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.
Epsom salt has many uses, as an all body exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and promote circulation, as a foot soaking agent to smooth, relax and refreshes your feet and neutralize odors, and as a facial exfoliate.
Below are some easy skin care recipes using Epsom salt. The cost is minimal yet very beneficial for your skin.
Just Like the Spa!
Massage a handful of Epsom Salt mixed with 1-tablespoon bath oil or olive oil and rub all over wet skin to cleanse exfoliate and soften the rough spots! Rinse well. Note recommended on freshly shaved legs.
Easy Facial Cleanser:
Mix 1/2 Tsp of Epsom Salt into cleansing cream for a deep-pore cleansing. Massage on skin. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry.
Epsom Salt Detox Bath Recipe
1 Cup Epsom salt
1 handful sea salt
2 Tablespoons bath oil
Pour the ingredients into the tub while the tub is filling.
Epsom salt has wonderful properties and uses that are beneficial to the mind, body, and soul. In addition, the cost of a box of Epsom salts is so minimal compared to all the fancy packaged skin care products, that you can indulge yourself as much as you like.
For those people that suffer from high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes, you should consult your doctor prior to using an Epsom salt bath. Additionally, the information provided above is not intended to replace the care or advice of a physician if you suffer from skin disorders, severe stress or anxiety, or other health problems.

Massage For Infants And Children
Massage benefits individuals of all age groups and different conditions. Touch is as important to any infants and kids like eating and sleeping. Massaging involves loving, gentle stroking or kneading by a parent or caregiver on various parts of a child's body like the face, head, arms, shoulders, neck, hands, back, legs and feet.
Use of oils on the body of your precious little ones to soothe, relax and heal affirms a strong, close bond conveying a comforting sense of trust and security.
Early infant massage enhances the development of the nervous system and stimulates all other systems of the body. It improves circulation, respiration, aids digestion and eases elimination of wastes from the body. It also makes your little one less prone to gas and colic ailments. Massage of baby in its growing years prepares the body for sitting, standing and walking.
Massage is a wonderful stress buster for children who are prone to all kind of stress. Like a child starting a school in a new area, health, fights amongst parents, exams or peer pressure, etc produce emotional, physical and mental stress. Massage reduces stress hormones and heals the body.
Each child responds differently to massage. Some may squirm, cry, or some might just appear more relaxed and calm and also fall asleep.
There is no fixed time to massage your baby. Find a time suitable for you and your baby. Some enjoy in the morning after their feed, some in the afternoon before or after their naps. Massage before bedtime can put a cranky baby to sleep peacefully. Follow the massage with a warm bath.
While giving a massage, sit straight either on the floor or on the bed or stand before the table. The room is warm enough as your little one can shiver when undressed. The place where you massage you baby should be quiet and away from distractions of all kinds.
Lay your child on soft surface like thick set of towels so it may not hurt it self when it wriggles or squirms. Keep aside towel, pair of wash cloths, clean diaper and baby clothes for use after the massage.
Oils are good for lubrication, helping your hand glide smoothly over your baby's soft and rather delicate skin. Small babies have a habit of putting their hand or fingers in their mouth all the time, so it's ideal to use oil that is of good quality. Use cold pressed (oils extracted by means of pressure) or unscented oils. Alternatively you can use baby oils produced by many companies which specialize in baby products. Grape seed oil has nice texture, apricot and almond oils are smooth, light and easily absorbable into the body. To massage your babies, use coconut oil in summers and mustard oil in winter.

Massage Away Stress And Endometriosis Pain?
Therapeutic massage is an alternative therapy that may be recommended to endometriosis sufferers. This may sound like a strange form of therapy, but many women who suffer from endometriosis find therapeutic massage to be quite rewarding. How? The reason is because when endometriosis flares up, muscles in the lower back can result in a painful protective spasm. Spasms can cause muscular tension in the abdomen and pelvic region. Thus, the right therapeutic massage helps to alleviate pelvic congestion. The techniques used in therapeutic massage manipulate the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the body to relieve and prevent discomfort, pain, stress, and muscle spasms.
The purpose of massages is to encourage relaxation and overall improvement on an individuals wellbeing. There are many different types of therapeutic massages that an endometriosis sufferer can benefit from. The following are some common therapeutic massages that are often used: Fertility Abdominal Acupressure (Massage) - This massage manipulates the abdomen to detoxify, purify and make a persons vital system stronger. It is believed by ancient Taoists that this massage creates balance and a harmonious flow of qi (life force) and blood throughout the body. This type of massage has been used to improve the lining of the uterus, as well as blood flow to the organs within the pelvic region.
Fertility abdominal massage can also aid in relieving painful Myofascial Release - a massage form that also combines stretching. The goal of this type of massage is to work on the "fascia" - a thin connective tissue that envelopes every organ and muscle within the body. Neuromuscular massage - The purpose of neuromuscular massage - also known as a deep tissue massage - is to release tension knots in the body that are known as trigger points. In order to release these trigger points, the massage style is designed to reach the connective tissues within the body including the ligaments, tendons and nerves. Reflexology - This is a massage performed on a persons feet. The belief is that by massaging certain "reflex zones" located on the feet, the massage can alleviate tension, improve circulation, and even ease pain in different parts of the body that correspond to these foot reflex zones. Swedish massage - This is a massage that promotes an overall relaxation throughout the body. A smooth, flowing technique is used by the massage therapist to help improve circulation within the body, alleviate muscular tension, and improve the bodys range of movement. The benefits of therapeutic massage in regards to endometriosis go beyond the simple relaxation of an affected persons physical and mental state.
Massages have been known to actually improve lymph and blood circulation, decrease irritation within the nerves, and transport nutrients and fresh oxygen to affected tissue. In addition, massages can cause the body to produce less cortisol and norepinephrine as well as reduce the production of other hormones related to stress. Therapeutic massages may also increase the bodys level of serotonin (mood altering hormone), and the production of endorphins that eradicate pain. In essence, therapeutic massage is a safe way to treat endometriosis, and just every sufferer can try it. However, make sure when you look into this form of treatment that you find a massage therapist who knows what they are doing.
Its important that you receive the best massage, so you can experience an effective result. Moreover, should you find that a therapeutic massage isnt for you, keep in mind that alternative treatments dont stop there. Ever thought about trying acupuncture? The Secret Of How Massage Therapy Benefits Your Overall Health
Getting a professional massage just might very well be one of the best ways to relax the mind, body and spirit. These days, professional massage therapists are in high demand, and although the occasional massage from one of these highly trained practitioners may cost what the average person considers a good bit of money, it seems well worth it to many. Not only does it make you feel wonderful from head to toe, it also has many health benefits that many people (and you?) are probably unaware of.
The best way to describe what a massage can do for a person’s overall health is explaining how a therapist can manipulate the body’s soft tissues, which means the massage therapist has complete control of a person’s musculature. The most common areas of the body that a therapist focuses on are the back, neck, arms, legs and, at times, even the jaw and head. Massages can help to alleviate the most common types of stress that occurs in the body’s muscles, wherever they are located. Still, simply describing massage methods doesn’t quite answer the question of what massage therapy can do to benefit a person’s overall health.
Reduce stress, live longer
One key benefit to massages is that they help lower high blood pressure. This is important information for someone who might suffer from high blood pressure and the various secondary conditions it causes or contributes to. Massage therapy helps lower a person’s heart rate, which, of course, is directly linked to blood pressure. Since high blood pressure can lead to serious health conditions, like heart attack and strokes, the occasional massage might be a good thing to try as a preventative against such conditions.
Interestingly, massage therapy has been shown to help certain people with certain, specific kinds of mental health conditions. Many psychiatrists will recommend that their patients receive a massage regularly to help alleviate depression symptoms, anxiety and other mental health conditions. The mechanism by which it works is hardly mysterious, but it is amazing for its simple effectiveness and ability to affect all major systems of the human body. Massage clearly relaxes the body, as well as the mind, at the same time, which can stimulate the brain’s production of both endorphins (natural pain killers) and mood-enhancing serotonin.
Set and setting, game and match
The human mind being the powerful creative force that it is, many massage therapists set the mood with candles, music and sometimes by burning incense. In addition to bringing a more soothing atmosphere to the massage, there are some indications that aromatherapy has some testable effects on stress, too. Enhancing the mood, therefore, may be a more powerful technique than even massage professionals now realize.
Massage therapy can bring a wide variety of beneficial elements to a person’s life. Many professional and amateur athletes have been known to use massage therapy, quite often before they play in a game, take to the track or strap on the skis. The massages that pro athletes receive help to relax them before they play, at which time they will exert themselves far beyond the normal demands of life, with more force and potential pain than most people will ever experience. The massage therapist is ready to help relieve their pain after the game is over, too.

More Than Just Massage: Continuing Education
Many people, when they think of massage school attendants, think of people who are learning massage for the first time. These new students spend hours each week pouring over anatomy books, learning every muscle and joint as comprehensively as they can so that it translates not only into excellent grades on their tests, but also into a solid knowledge base out of which to practice the healing art of massage. The friends of those in massage school- whether a North Carolina massage school or elsewhere- tend to get pretty lucky as students need to practice on live humans. What could be better than free massage, knowing that by playing lab bunny, you'll help your friend to develop their skills, and you'll get some bodywork done in the process!
Of course, this image is only part of the whole. Many practicing massage therapists return to school for massage continuing education classes. It might be that there is a new modality that they desire to learn, either as a separate healing practice, or to use in conjunction with massage. Popular modalities in this range include reflexology, cranial sacral massage, cupping, etc. Other potential fields of study include Asian bodywork, such as shiatsu, or other massage techniques such as Ayurvedic massage. There are so many different ways to bring healing to people, that is is completely unsurprising that those already working in that field might seek to learn more such ways.
When it comes to finding the right space to learn in, there are several things to keep in mind. One is the environment in which you want to learn. The school's environment is a very important part of this equation, and the only way to really know how you mesh with a school is to go there and see for yourself. Interview with some of the teachers, see the school, interact with some of the students, see what you like and don't like about the school. Secondary to that, but similarly important, is how you feel about the location of the school. Do you like the city that it is in? If you are considering living someplace for the duration of school, of visiting there for a few weeks to take a few courses, it's generally best that it be some place you enjoy being, especially for long term study. Your outside environment affects you heavily, and if you are unhappy and uncomfortable, you probably won't bring your very best to what you want to learn.

Myofascial Release & Massage: Alternative Therapies for Fibromyalgia
There are many alternative therapies for Fibromyalgia and each individual may be affected differently by each therapy. A therapy that works well for one may not benefit another as much or at all. It is important to know what is available to you that can help better your quality of life and help you manage your pain.
I have tried several different therapies and there are a few that really helped and one in particular, was a life-saver! My hope is that you can find a therapy that you can add to your conventional treatment and gain freedom of movement and freedom from the stress and depression that are caused by Fibromyalgia.
Integrative Medicine: The idea was developed to help medical and other health professionals to expand their practices by and integrating accessible effective Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) protocols for the treatment of their patients. This would bring patients more complete care and give them all the help that is available to improve their overall health. Some of the therapies included are: Energy Therapies (including CMU Technology), Herbs and Supplements, Nutrition, Lifestyle Strategies, Biochemical Approaches and Structural, Movement and Mind-Body Therapies.
In this article, I will cover two structural, movement and mind-body therapies: Myofascial Release Therapy & Massage Therapy.
Massage therapy helps with Fibromyalgia because it gently works on the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, fascia and ligaments). Massage increases circulation of blood to tight, sore muscles & increases muscle tone. It is sometimes used in conjunction with ultrasound or with the application of heat and/or cold packs. Massage is also often helpful in removing built-up toxins such as lactic acid, and to help re-educate muscles and joints that have become misaligned.
Massage also helps the movement of lymphatic fluid (removes body wastes, toxins, pathogens), to release muscular tension, maintain proper musculoskeletal structure and function, internal organs, the central nervous system, the immune system, the endocrine system, mind/body integration, and energy flow to promote healing and emotional well-being.
Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial knots to eliminate pain and restore motion. To understand what Myofascial Release is and why it works, you need to know what fascia is. Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body. It is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without disconnection. Myofascial Release treats taut bands in the muscle by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia. I was treated with the John Barnes method of Myofascial Release after a car accident that inflamed my Fibromyalgia symptoms and led to the discovery of myofascial trigger points. Even if you do not have Chronic Myofascial Pain, you can still benefit greatly from this therapy.
There are many more alternative therapy options out there and I will continue to provide information about them in hopes of giving you and your doctor the ability to make an informed decision about what therapies might work for you.

The goal oforiental massage is to achieve balance and harmony in the body and bring about an overall sense of well being.
